The London Archers Youth Baseball Team (U14) to compete in the 68th Pony League World Series

Author: BBF , 04/08/19

The London Archers U14 Team will be the first British Team to represent Great Britain in the PONY WORLD SERIES.

The London Archers (youth U14 baseball club), winners of the European PONY Tournament earlier this year, set-off to play in the 68th Pony League World Series in Washington, Pennsylvania, the home of PONY Baseball, from the 9th to the 15th August.

PONY Baseball and Softball™ began with the organisation of the Pony League in Washington, PA in the summer of 1951. The mentioned was a transition league for 13-year-old and 14-year-old players designed to take graduates of Little League baseball from that diamond to the regulation size diamond. The growth of Pony League, primarily by word of mouth, was rapid, and by the end of the second season, 1952, the original six teams in Washington were joined by 505 others in 106 leagues around the country. A national tournament was conducted, and the first Pony League World Series was held that year.

PONY Baseball International competition and British teams participation has been a part of youth baseball in Great Britain which dates back more than a decade. That is, youth clubs or teams registerered with the British Baseball Federation (The National Governing Body of Baseball) have taken part in international PONY Qualifiers over the years. The London Archers will be the first British Baseball Federation Club to win a youth international European Championship of the magnitude of the European Zone Baseball Championship earlier in the year and now go on to compete at the highest international level e.g., PONY World Series. So, much credit has to go to the London Archers Baseball Club, coaches and volunteers which have developed their club, i.e., by matching the right coaches and volunteers to train and oversee their teams, which personify the culture and values of developing a great baseball programme. Moreover, the players throughout the club are not only great baseball players, but the best ambassadors for British Baseball, and we could not be prouder of their accomplishments," said a spokesperson for the British Baseball Federation.

The BBF spokes person went on to say, "We are grateful to Abe Key (president) and PONY Baseball for all their hard work in collaborating with the BBF member youth clubs over the years to ensure there has been British representation in the PONY European Qualifiers. PONY Baseball is an organisation we are proud to work with and we intend to expand our relationship with PONY. PONY is an organisation which personifies an open working relationship with us the National Governing Body of the sport, to help develop the best opportunities and development for youth baseball in Great Britain and abroad."
